Tuition Remission

Part-time faculty members may receive tuition remission in the undergraduate division (but not the graduate division, although P-fac has repeatedly tried to change this) equal to the number of credit hours taught, up to a maximum of six credit hours per semester. These credits may be used in the semester earned or within one year from the time earned.
For example, if you taught six credits in Fall 2008, the six-credit remission must be used by the end of the next fall semester, i.e. Fall 2009. Credits may be used in the summer session. No more than six credits may be used by a part-timer in any one semester.
During a semester in which the faculty member teaches, an immediate family member may receive tuition remission up to a maximum of three credit hours. These credits must be used in the semester in which they are earned. Immediate family is defined as spouse or dependent children. (Informally, Human Resources has stated that registered domestic partners also qualify.  Contact HR for details.)

Tuition remission does not equal “free;”  only the tuition is covered. Remission does not cover registration fees, class fees, or classes at any outside contracted agency.
Applicants for remission must contact the Admissions Office http://www.colum.edu/Admissions/apply and file for financial aid via the Student Financial Services Office. http://colum.edu/Student_Financial_Services/.

Tuition will be remitted only after applying all other sources of financial aid such as Pell Grants, loans, Illinois State scholarship grants, or any of the various scholarship grants available through the College. If the tuition remission course is not completed, the individual will be liable for all tuition and fees for that course, subject to the College’s normal withdrawal refund policy.

A tuition waiver request must be submitted as part of the Student Financial Services Office aid application process. (Forms are available in the Student Financial Services Office.) If this form is not filed, the financial aid award may be reduced retroactively.Individuals applying for tuition remission may register during the open registration period after all continuing and new students have registered. An authorization form must be completed and filed with the Bursar by the first week of classes of the semester in which the tuition remission is requested.
